Bake Oven Knob, elevation 1,500 feet, is a great place for watching migrating hawks and other birds, especially at this time of year. Except for the first mile or so, the trail includes many rocks and boulders. Sturdy footwear and a walking stick/hiking poles are recommended. The hike is appropriate for children over 4. Dogs on leash are welcome. Dress in layers suitable for the weather. Optional: garden gloves (for the rough rocks) and binoculars/camera for the views and the migrating birds. No bathrooms available. DIRECTIONS: Do NOT attempt to drive up Bake Oven Knob Road from the north/Carbon County! The road is impassable. From Route 22 take Rt. 309 north. Take note of your mileage at the intersection where Rt. 873 splits with Rt. 309. From the split go 4.4 miles on Rt. 309 to Pleasant Corners. Turn right onto Bake Oven Road. Go on Bake Oven Rd for about 3.8 miles to a stop sign at Mountain Road. Cross Mountain Road and continue on Bake Oven Road for 0.5 mile to a stop sign at Church/Walter Road. Turn left for 0.2 miles and turn right onto Bake Oven Road. Bake Oven Road becomes gravel. Continue up for 1.4 miles. At the crest of the mountain are two parking areas. We will meet in the parking area on the right side of the road. GPS: 40.744856, -75.738701.
