Although these trails are not in Wildlands’ 440-acre South Mountain Preserve, they connect to trails there. This hike takes us over and around some amazing rock formations. We’ll see old quarries and get quite close to I-78. Our route goes up South Mountain via switchbacks to a powerline with good views of south Allentown and on clear days, the Blue Ridge. The total elevation gain is about 265 feet. This 2.5 mile hike is mostly on single track trails with many rocks, roots and fallen leaves. We’ll also walk on a sandy trail under a powerline. Dress in layers for the weather and wear sturdy, comfortable footwear. Bring hiking poles. Wildlands will have poles available too. Dogs on leash are welcome. Bring binoculars and/or camera for the views through the bare trees. No bathrooms are available. DIRECTIONS: From I-78 in south Allentown, take Exit 57/Lehigh Street and go south on Lehigh St. to 31st Street. Turn left at the light onto 31st St and go 0.3 mile to W. Emmaus Ave. Turn left onto Emmaus Ave and go 0.4 mile to 28th Street. Turn right onto 28th. Dollar General is across the street. Follow 28th up to near its end. Park on the residential street. We’ll meet near the gate at the end of 28th Street.
